History of Maxwell Street Legal Clinic

The Maxwell Street Legal Clinic was first conceived by a young Presbyterian seminary student and a devout Roman Catholic priest, both of whom were involved with the immigrant community in central Kentucky and both of whom were fluent in Spanish. From their recognition of a pervasive need, came a series of focused meetings about how poor people, who are new to this country, get the legal assistance they need. Existing legal service agencies receive federal funding, which severely restricts the kind of people they may serve and the kind of cases they may accept. As a result, on October 3, 1999, the Maxwell Street Legal Clinic opened its doors with a host of volunteer attorneys and translators.

Our clients come from more than 100 different countries, and approximately 85% of them are Hispanic. On May 1, 2002, the Fayette County Bar Association and the Fayette Circuit Court awarded the Maxwell Street Legal Clinic an Award of Achievement for its efforts toward "Assuring Equal Justice for All." In addition, in December 2005, the Asociacion de Hispanos Unidos (Association of United Hispanics) presented their Annual Service Achievement Award to the Legal Clinic for its ongoing commitment to serving the Hispanic/Latino community of Lexington. In 2009, MSLC received the Liberation Award from the Kentucky Rescue & Restore coalition for its work providing legal assistance to victims of human trafficking.
